Title of a novel by Katherine Anne Porter, made into a film in 1965, which garnered numerous Oscars for its distinguished cast. The plot involves a voyage from Mexico to Bremerhaven, Germany during the run-up to WWII. Somehow, the title calls to mind (to me, at least) the current process, such as it is, for the Republican Party to assemble a cabinet.
Overall question: What is he thinking? His first attorney general nomination (trial balloon?) was a classic fox-in-the-henhouse thing. I find it hard to believe Trump was totally ignorant about at least some of the stuff attributed to Gaetz. Then, we have the clown nominated to lead the Pentagon and all those ships at sea. Apparently, he can’t organize a two car funeral, let alone probably the most massive, complex cabinet department, with somewhere north of three million people – even when sober. Well, they are mostly suckers and losers, anyway.
Then there’s Tulsi Gabbert. Russian asset? Maybe not, but to place her as head of the intelligence community at the cabinet level?
Foreign intel services might withhold sensitive information out of concern for her, er, judgment. Would love to know what Vladimir Putin has on POTUS-elect…….
As Secretary of Health and Human Services – drum roll – RFK, Jr. A vaccine denier, heroin addict (former, we hope), and all-around nut case, he has no legitimate medical bona fides, but does have a law degree, I suppose. Oh well, that confers on one instant wisdom on just about anything. Doesn’t it?
Kash Patel as FBI Director. Following the reign of J. Edgar Hoover, FBI Directors have been, for the most part, former police chiefs or other genuine law enforcement executives. Kash is none of these. He seems to be mostly a crackpot who seeks to destroy the Bureau, rather than to head it. In this dangerous world, do we really want to emasculate the agency that has been able to prevent numerous threats to the safety of Americans? Again, what is Trump thinking??
One ray of hope: Trump’s seeming lack of understanding of simple arithmetic – he has nominated several House and Senate members to cabinet positions. This has effectively “tied” the House, and thinned out the slight Senate GOP majority. For what it’s worth.
So we have this Ship of Fools steering the Ship of State through the next four years. Hopefully, we’ll have fair winds and a following sea – but don’t count on it!
